Strays & Owner Surrenders
Please READ THIS ENTIRE PAGE for a full description of the placement resources we have available.
We ask that you keep in mind that the moment one of our foster home's is available, we IMMEDIATELY rescue another dog from a shelter. This is why our foster homes are ALWAYS FULL and why we are unable to proivde a foster home for your dog or a found dog.
If you are thinking of re-homing your dog, please take a moment to read through solutions to the most common reasons people give up on their pets.
COURTESY LISTING
FOR OWNED DOGS - MINIMUM HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
- You MUST show proof of ownership by providing us a vet history. These records are to be scanned (PDF FILES ONLY) and emailed to the Executive Director or faxed to 512-366-9897.
- Your dog MUST be neutered, current on vaccinations (DHPP and rabies).
- Email us three pictures of your dog (no humans in the pictures)
- Write a brief bio about your dog and include your contact information (email and/or phone number that WILL be published on our website.)
- Please let us know as soon as your dog finds a home. If a listing goes beyond 90 days it may be deleted and you will need to resubmit the information for re-posting.
- You will remain the dog’s legal owner and be fully responsible for making sure the dog goes to a good home.
- Should the adoption not work out, the dog will be returned to you.
- We strongly suggest that you ask for a re-homing fee (at least $75), do a home check and have the person sign a contact. We are happy to provide you with a generic adoption agreement upon request.
FOR FOUND/STRAY DOGS - STEPS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW PRIOR TO COURTESY LISTING
- Take the dog to any vet or shelter and have the dog scanned for a micro chip.
- If none is found, call 311 to report the dogs as "found" with Town Lake (or if found in another county, contact that municipal shelter.)
- Provide the shelter with a picture of the dog.
- Post poster/flyers in the area where you found the dog and notify local veterinarians, groomers, etc.
- Hold the dog for a minimum of 5 days (in your home or other location) to see if the owner can be located.
- If the owner does not come forward and you would like to request a courtesy listing:
- Fax (512-366-9897) or email the Executive Director proof the dog is altered and vaccinated (DHPP and Rabies) NO EXCEPTIONS.
- Once contacted by the ED, email three pictures of your dog (no humans in the pictures)
- Write a brief bio about the dog and include your contact information you wish to have published with your listing
- The listing is only good for 30 days so you must let us know after 30 days if your dog has found a home or if you need the listing extended, which we are always happy to do if you let us know. Otherwise the posting will be deleted
You're dog's photo will not be displayed on the front page slide show. This is the page where your dog will be listed. Austin Dog Rescue will NOT be involved, responsible for, or be a part of the adoption process or approval of the home. The dog will remain in your care and ownership and you will be fully responsible for making sure the dog goes to a good home. Should the adoption not work out, the dog will be returned to you. We strongly suggest that you ask for a re-homing fee (at least $75), do a home safety check and have the person sign a contact. We are happy to provide you with a generic adoption agreement upon request.
